While the ComicMix March Madness Webcomics Tournament continues in earnest, there is another “March Madness” event that I consider so awesome that I (remember, with NO drawing talent and mediocre Photoshopiness) have contributed to myself.
MARCH MODOK MADNESS!, a tribute to one of Marvel Comics’ oddest supervillains, described as the MODOK fans behind the project as “a massive, malevolent, mindblasting menace of malice and mirth”.

Begun in 2008 with several artists each committing to 5 MODOK-related pieces during the month, it started with some standard ‘fan art’…

but quickly veered off into new directions with such contributions as…
Stick Figure MODOK by ‘Titivil’

Cheerleading “Big Foam Finger” MODOK by ‘Fonce Falooda’

Wild West MODOK by ‘Gogopedro’

MODOK, LARRYDOK and CURLYDOK by ‘Clinky’

MODUK (it is Easter season) by ‘Gogopedro’

MODOK on his day off by ‘Fonce Falooda’

LOLMODOK by Brendan Tobin

and even a game of MO-DO-KU!

Is there any doubt why I would love this? (THE PUNS!!!)
As the month wore on, the MODOK blog got submissions from outside the initial circle of friends, and when March turned to April, they decided “we got to do this again”. Initial plans for MODOKTOBERFEST had to be dropped due to spelling considerations, but come March 2009, they were back for more Killing with a Kapital K.
James Stowe did a St. Patrick’s Day MODOCHAUN…

Giorgio Comolo totally wowed me with an intricate Giger-inspired MODOK…

And what if the “K” in MODOK stood for Knitting instead of Killing?

Or how about a MO-DALEK (two terrors in one from Francesco Francavilla)

2010 saw MODOK Madness hit maximum levels of non-sanity…
Ubiquitous webartist Ryan Estrada provided an EMODOK…

and MOTOWN…

and a Flintstonian MOROCK…

and also integrated MODOK into his webcomic-in-progress “Chillin’ Like Villains”
Disney’s Purchase of Marvel inspired some works, like Dominic’s “Marvel Organism Disneyfied Only for Kids”

and Mooshe Nickerson’s Scrooge MODOK or MODuck or McDOK, whatever.

How about rival media mogul Rupert MODOK by Stewart Fulton?

Or “Hello MODOK” by Holly Mongi (I’d never noticed the similarity in shapes…)

Or CSI: MODOK by Ian Sokoliwski

And March Modok Madness cofounder Brendan Tobin somehow recruited a team of Marvel-like artists to make a multipage comc book mockup for “The Maleficent MODOK!”

But it really got crazy when one very amateurish artist plugged MODOK into some online image generating widgets… and that amateur was ME.

Of course, once I was allowed to get my nose into the tent in ’10, I came back in ’11 to contribute a mess of MODOK memes…
The MODOKter (Who?)

What do you get when you cross MODOK with Charlie Sheen? Don’t ask.

Remember “Paula Deen on Top of Things”? You’ll wish you hadn’t.

MODOKen Jennings on REAL Jeopardy

Don’t “Turn Off the Dark”, “Turn ON the DOK”

“MOE-DOK” had been done multiple times, and was joined by “CURLY-DOK” and “LARRY-DOK”? Well, what about SHEMP? Leave it to me…

I realized I was losing it when I did…

“This one requires some explaining; when the cartoonist behind HijiNKS ENSUE started designing a “hate-filled pineapple”, I realized the similar shape of pineapples and MODOKS but I made the artistic (lazy) decision not to give my pineapple MODOK an angry face. I may reconsider. Stay tooned.”

I was diagnosed with a MODOK Overdose and took 2012 off… but I’m coming back for this year’s March MODOK Madness, cutting and pasting and killing and going cra-a-a-azy!!! Stay tooned.
